Some Like It Fake

Some like pie
Some like cake
And some like cherries
That are startlingly fake

They probably were real once
And hanging off a tree
But that was back before the war,
A distant memory.

They are sitting in a syrup
The consistency of glue
They've been soaking up that bright red dye
Since 1942

But here they come packed in a can
The model of convenience
A constant in each cake and pie
Despite the changing seasons.

So practical these cherries are,
That if your lights should blow
Your guests will locate their dessert
By its phosphorescent glow.

The sight of that bright red dye makes my throat close up. Two slices please! During my last breaths I'll enjoy your hilarious poetry.

Nowadays it's the ice cream that'd have super-enhanced color. "Superman" topped with M&Ms and colored sprinkles please!

The colors are great, but yeah, the thought of eating so much red dye is unappetizing. I believe red food coloring is actually banned in some European countries because it was determined to be harmful to children.

P.L. - It is a stunning color, isn't it? I think people liked their food in Technicolor.

GoRetroGirl - Oh yeah, Red Dye #2! I remember. I guess these were chockfull of it...

Nice poem. Your not kidding about the phosphorescent glow either! Nice blog.

My, those cherries give a whole new meaning to cherry red, don't they?

I wish I was a little squiggly drawn character eating some cherry pie right now. I don't know why but it just sounds really really good. Even with toxic foodcoloring...

Those radioactive cherries make my eyes hurt. *blink blink*

Desert Soapstone - Thanks :)

Tori - They are the definitive statement on cherry red, I think!

Eric - It tends to taste best in a retro diner, I think. Probably. Anyway, the squigglies seem to be enjoying it (I hope that they didn't end up that way because of the cherry stuff, though)

Hairball - That's the perfect adjective for them!

Cherryredetc - Goodness gracious, no, not really...

Koekkener - Thanks, but the recipes are few and far between here these days. In fact I did not even give you a recipe in this post! But I guess there are suggestions for recipes implied here and there...

Alterity - That is quite a thought!
