The Schick Magnet

"Let's give Daddy the red one! It'll be great, 'cause it's five times as big as his head! He sure is going to enjoy shaving with it!

"And then can we get the other three colors and hang them on the tree. Pleeese? They're only $29.50 each and Schick is First with Colors For Men! So he will probably want all the other colors too. Come on Mom, he will love it. We can even call it our Schickmas tree! Get it, Schickmas? Huh?

"And then...can I please get a pair of pants?"

Bigger version here (I even remembered to make it public on Flickr, hurrah!). From Life, December 3, 1956.

I still have the first "electric" I ever bought. 1953. Remington, almost as big as the Schick. Still shave with a Remington. More recent model, though.

Ooh. Memory of the rash makes may neck burn as I write this.

I wonder why the white one (which doesn't really qualify as a COLOR, per se) comes in a different style box....

Nope, its private...or maybe its just me - huh? lol...and as for merry shickmas. holy crapmas. funniest thing ever.

Schickly speaking, Mom...maybe we could get the pants first and worry about Daddy later!

They were truly the iPhones of yesteryear, weren't they?

Every time I see a Schick, I'm reminded of an All In The Family episode where Archie and Edith have a huge fight. He makes up to her by bringing her a present - a Lady Schick razor. Ah, the worlds problems solved by Schick.

BWAH!

Lidian, it is totally unfair how darn funny you are! It's gotta must be all those wacky floating heads over at your house that keep inspiring you to greatness.

vanilla - That is cool that you still have it. I wonder what my dad used in the 60s? I have no idea, now that I think of it. I think it was not an electric one though.

Tori - That is a good question. I have no idea, maybe it is the "special" one for some strange reason (???) Does anyone know?

Tracy - I'm afraid that the small version of the ad does not really show the incredible silliness of the original. Kid looks just like Christopher Robin, with the little coat and hat and - uh, there MUST be short pants. Somewhere. Some winter shopping getup, huh?

Needless To Say - Good plan!

Eric - That's true, they were! And wasn't there one awhile back that could pick up radio signals?

Barbara - Yes, they truly made a spectacular gift!

Hairball - Katia, the alpha-cat of our two, would probably say that it is her sitting near my computer all day that makes it all work out. She meows loudly when I get up and do anything else.

Either that, or it's the 30s lady's floating head over the desk (she has a few things to say, too!)

Ah, the memories of buying Daddy a bottle of Jade East aftershave, Jade East soap-on-a-rope, Jade East deodorant to go along with his Schick . . . and then finding out years later he HATED Jade East. He truly loved us.

Christine - I also got my dad Jade East for Christmas! :) I am going to feature a Jade East ad later this month, too.

Nothing quite as exciting as a shaver for X-mas, well ... maybe a red tie. (( smile ))

God, that was expensive! No wonder Mom could only afford Spaghetti-Os after that!
